What is the biggest obstacle to world peace?
The biggest obstacle to world peace is that we are not built for peace.
We are built for ruthless competition and war, as we are all driven by a 100% self-serving, self-justifying, individualistic and exploitative nature. When we look at history, the endless, helplessly recurring vicious cycles with wars and conflicts “writing our history”, even today. We define ourselves through ruthless competition, constantly comparing ourselves to others, succeeding and surviving at each other’s expense.
This is not our fault or crime, this is how nature’s evolution programmed us.
On the other hand, human beings are unique as we also have a human intellect that is capable of critical self-assessment and initiating self-change and self-development. Thus we can and have to recognize and accept that it is the inherent nature in all of us, it is our fighting and competing instincts that drive us towards constant conflicts and wars.
And when we have already recognized this and we also built a true, irrepressible desire and need to change ourselves in order to make peace, then will true and lasting peace unfold within nations and between nations.
True peace is a dynamic and constaly reinforced state above instinctive animosity and incliunation for war. It is something that requires a special method to learn and maintain, it will not happen through politics, activism or wishful thinking. We have to recognize and overcome our inherent nature – all of us – if we truly want a peaceful world where we can all survive and prosper.
