What is “legal,” and what is “acceptable”?
Question from the Internet:
“Just because an activity seems Legal, does that make it Acceptable?”
You are right; it is not inevitable.
Our laws are not absolute and are not unquestionable. Moreover, they constantly change.
Our laws — like everything else in the human system — are the construct of our inherently egocentric, self-serving, self-justifying, and subjective consciousness and viewpoint. And the laws always reflect the will of the actual minority that rules over the majority. This has always been like that throughout history.
As ideologies, governments, goals, and aspirations change, our laws change with them. And each country, religion, or culture has its own laws that often contradict the laws, costumes, and actions of other countries, religions, and cultures.
On the other hand, when we talk about “acceptable,” that also depends on the actual mindset, mood, situation, and feeling of each egocentric and subjective individual. What seems acceptable to me today might become unacceptable in different times, situations and circumstances, and it is even more so when we examine different individuals and see what is acceptable or unacceptable for them.
And as long as we all remain within our inherently egocentric, subjective, and self-justifying individual viewpoints and bubbles, we all remain in human societies that are built on quicksand without any actual or solid foundations they can stand on.
Only when we all learn how to exit our inherently distorted and limited bubbles and viewpoints and acquire truly selfless and objective viewpoints and outlooks on each other and the world can we establish laws and foundations for human societies where “legal” and “acceptable” will be standards we can all adhere to and agree with.
Then we will all feel and accept that the laws of Nature, the strict and unchanging laws that facilitate the creation and nurturing of life, are the laws we all need to follow and live by.
