Using technology for sustainable existence
Question from the Internet:
“How can technology be used to promote sustainablility?”
Technology can be used to promote sustainability when human beings learn and understand what sustainability is and why we need to pursue a sustainable lifestyle.
Technology will achieve whatever we use it for. How technology performs depends on the aims and intentions we use technology with. Technology itself is a tool, everything depends on the user.
Technology, in and of itself, cannot achieve anything and it cannot solve problems. The users, human beings can achieve things and solve problems – with the use of technology – when we understand the system we exist in, we understand ourselves and how we need to adapt ourselves to the system we exist in.
We exist in a fully and mutually integrated natural system, that is governed by strict and unchanging laws. These laws sustain the general balance and homeostasis that life and optiaml development depend on. The natural system is “sustainable” because all of its comprising elements – outside of human beings – exist within their natural necessities, respecting and taking care of the available, natural resources.
Animals also fight for survival, they compete and even consume each other. But they never upset the general balance and homeostasis, and when they fight or consume each other, they do so dictated by their role and purpose in the system, fulfilling their instinctive and predetermined role in the overall “circle of life”.
Human beings – in contrast – are born with an inherent nature that is incompatible with nature’s general balance and homeostasis. We excessively overconsume whatever we can for our own sake, we do not even know what our true necessities are and we have no idea about our available resources. We base our development on reckless and “infinite” quantitative growth, while exclusively competing with everything and everybody so we could succeed and survive at the expense of others and nature.
Thus before we even start talking about or planning sustainablility, we would need to change ourselves to become compatible with nature’s finely balanced and mutually integrated system. Only when we achieve some resemblance to nature’s system through “nature-like” mutual integration between us can we start to understand what sustainable existence is and what our available resources are.
Then we will be able to start using our technology to promote and facilitate sustainable existence, respecting and partnering nature’s system.
The reson we have to go through this conscious self-development and self-change is to acquire a fully conscious understanding of the system and its laws. Our unique, evolutionary human purpose in the system is to become its conscious and benevolent partners and guardians. It is for this role that we had to be born opposite to and incompatible with the system. Then, through our proactive and fully aware adaptation to the system we gain the necessary knowledge and experience that will make us suitbale to fulfill the role evolution predetermined for us.
