The Transformative Power of Suffering in Spiritual Awakening
Suffering is not merely an obstacle to endure; it is a profound catalyst for connecting with the singular force that governs all reality — the Creator. In our present state, marked by self-reliance and pride, we often feel like masters of our own universe. Yet, it is only when this illusion crumbles, when life becomes intolerable, that we are compelled to seek salvation beyond ourselves. Without suffering, there is no impetus to turn to the Creator, no desperate yearning for divine intervention.
To truly connect with this singular force, we must reach a state of utter helplessness. We must feel “poor” in spirit, stripped of all ability to escape our unbearable circumstances through our own power or the aid of others. This dire condition forces us to swallow our pride and cry out for help, acknowledging that only a miracle — an external force — can remedy our plight. In such moments, even those who do not profess faith often find themselves praying, their hearts reaching instinctively toward something greater.
For those already on a spiritual path, striving to tangibly reveal and understand the Creator, this state of desperation becomes not only useful but desired. A true and honest prayer arises only when we have exhausted every effort, when we know beyond doubt that no human solution exists. This prayer is the bridge to the Creator, the singular life source from which all existence flows. It is through this raw, inconsolable need that we progress toward our ultimate purpose: to become so similar to the Creator that we begin to attain, understand, and partner with this force.
Yet, suffering need not always be physical or material. There is a higher form of suffering — “love suffering” — born not from external blows but from an aching desire to align with the Creator’s qualities of pure, selfless, and unconditional love. Our inherent nature is the opposite: a 100% selfish, individualistic, and exploitative ego. To overcome this, the pursuit of similarity with the Creator must become the singular goal of our lives. Each moment we fall short of this goal, each time we feel distant from embodying these godly qualities, our situation becomes intolerable — not because of physical pain, but because we have not yet achieved the all-consuming similarity we seek.
This love suffering is cultivated within a group, through and for the sake of others. Since we cannot yet directly connect with the Creator, we practice selfless love by serving those around us, treating their desires as our own, despite our ego’s resistance. This internal struggle intensifies as we collectively deepen our commitment to the Creator’s qualities. The ego fights back, growing ever more cunning, until we reach a breaking point — the “gate of tears.” Here, love suffering manifests as an overwhelming yearning to act through the Creator’s qualities, coupled with the painful realization that our ego prevents us from breaking free.
This spiritual path demands that we constantly transcend our instincts, emotions, and perceptions. We must rise above our self-serving egos and develop a faith that is not blind but transformative — a faith rooted in the quality of bestowal. This “spiritual faith” requires us to serve unconditionally, without calculation, trusting that through these godly qualities, we will gain a new, tangible perception of reality. It is a leap beyond intellect, logic, and experience, a willingness to exist for others without expecting reward.
The journey is arduous, a relentless battle against the ego that grows more challenging with each step. We must ignore the ego’s complaints and excuses, embracing the gentle pull of the Creator to exit our self-centered existence. To become a servant of the Creator, we commit to serving others selflessly, without knowing the Creator fully or expecting personal gain. The only reward we seek is the ability to love and serve unconditionally, for through this, we align with the Creator’s essence.
Ultimately, this path is about justifying the Creator as the benevolent force that nurtures all reality with absolute love. Each new state on this spiritual ladder brings us to the gate of tears — a moment of irrepressible need, a prayer that is both a cry for elevation and a step closer to divine similarity. Through suffering, whether physical or born of love, we are refined, drawn ever nearer to the Creator’s infinite embrace.
