The Jewish method of human self-correction

An article in The Jerusalem Post:

My comment:

I agree with the final conclusion of the article.

The problem is that we completely forgot what Lag BaOmer and all our other Holidays and writings keep telling us: true unity is something “supernatural”. It requires great preparation and constant care because we have to build and maintain true unity above and against the inherently selfish, exploitative and hateful human nature.

The proverbial “unfounded hatred” — I simply hate others because they are different from me, and I consider them as competition and enemy — is in all of us. It is the cancer-like, all-consuming, and all-destroying human ego that is behind all of our calculations, thoughts, decisions, and actions.

Moreover, this ego cannot be suppressed or erased either, and it is constantly growing and intensifying during human history and during our lifespan.

This is why true unity requires a special method that can — first of all — help us diagnose and accept the destructive ego operating and governing in us, and then this method also can help us learn and practice how to exist and behave above and despite this ego.

Only the Jewish people possess this method, which method can recruit and harness reality’s single operating and governing force to help us develop a second and opposite nature compared to the nature we are born with.

Our unparalleled and crucially important Jewish role in the world is to implement our own method of self-correction and — through our positive example — also help others to do the same.
