Nature, globalization and medical technologies
Question from the Internet:
How will de-globalization affect the progress of medical technologies?
I am not sure what you mean by “de-globalization”. “Globalization” — existence in a globally integrated and fully interdependent system is not something humans invented, implemented and humans have any control over.
Our integration into a global system, where everybody depends on everybody else is part of our Natural evolution. The whole Natural system is fully and mutually integrated and all parts and elements work together to maintain the general balance and homeostasis that life depends on.
Humanity — as an integral part of Nature as one of Nature’s species — have to become compatible with the whole system, otherwise, we lose our right to survive. And Nature’s rejection of our species has already started.
It is another question how we use “globalization”. At this stage, we try to use the inevitable integration and interdependence in the usual, inherently self-serving and self-justifying and exploitative way we do everything instinctively. As a result, we exist and behave like cancer towards each other and Nature — basically rejecting ourselves from Nature’s otherwise mutually integrated and mutually complementing system.
Nature can exist without humanity, humanity cannot exist without Nature.
Regarding medical technologies, it works exactly like all other business ventures, based on selfish, never-ending profit and ruthless, exclusive competition. As an orthopedic surgeon I know first-hand how the orthopedic implant industry for example is driven solely by business models, mostly regardless of the needs of the patients or the surgeons, many times pushing and promoting devices that are worse than their predecessors and are harmful simply for the sake of profit.
But again, this has nothing to do with “globalization”, it is down to our inherent nature and the values and goals we pursue.
So everything — our adaptation to Nature’s integrated system, and to create a better, truly patient and doctor oriented medical industry — depends on changing and further developing our inherent human nature. Only when we consciously and purposefully learn how to relate to each other and the world as all other elements of Nature do, only when our focus is on the wellbeing and most optimal development of the whole Natural system — including Humanity — above and against our instinctively selfish, egocentric calculations, only then will things work out in any sector of human activity.
