My hero is Moses…

Question from the Internet:

“Who is your hero and the person you would most want to be like, and why?”

Wise sages say, that a hero is one who can defeat oneself, and the hero of heroes is the one that can make one’s enemy one’s friend — meaning, the hero of heroes is the one who can even learn how to use one’s only enemy — the person’s own ego — for the sake of helping, serving, loving others.

In that respect “my hero” is Moses, the quintessential leader from the Torah, since through a gradual process the character of Moses restricted his original “Egyptian” nature (Egypt, and the Pharaoh symbolize our ego in the Torah) and then reluctantly became the most selfless, loyal leader of his nation, helping all of them to escape their own egos (their own Egypt and Pharaoh) leading them to perfection while he could not even reach it by himself.

Moses represents the most perfect self-annulment, unconditional service of others, self-sacrifice in order to lead others to success through a positive example.

As the same wise sages note, if we all could become like Moses, the world would become perfect.
