Humans are driven by an insatiable desire for pleasures

Our main “matter”, the engine that drives us is the insatiable, ever-growing and never-satisfied desire for pleasures and fulfilment.
It does not matter if we are aware of this or not, but it is this desire that keeps us alive and makes us do anything. At any given moment our unique, subjective and egocentric “personal computer” makes endless and very complex calculations to take us closer to greater, more fulfilling pleasures while distancing us from actual or feared pain.
It does not matter what we think or do, we will always find the same basic, self-centered “pleasure/pain” calculations behind everything.
This desire in us works as an addict, since whatever we already have today will not be enough tomorrow. This is why constantly need bigger, stronger, faster, more tasty and more enticing all the time. Unfortunately, this insatiable selfish desire in us — that propelled the incredible human development so far — also makes us behave like cancer in the fully integrated and interdependent world we live in.
This is why it is extremely important that we learn about our own inherent nature, we fully understand what and why we are doing. Then we could consciously and purposefully adjust, further develop ourselves until our inherent desire becomes aligned with Nature’s strict and unforgiving laws that govern the general balance and homeostasis that life depends on.
