Human society is built by Human nature, we can’t change society without changing our nature

Opinion from the Internet of consumerism, Human nature:

Consumerism has nothing to do with “human nature” and more to do with heavy advertising that makes us want things we don’t really need. It’s a very modern thing since before WW2 people could get more stuff but didn’t because their wares didn’t need replacing so much. But businesses soon found out the (modern) economy cannot work if people are satisfied with what they already have so they do all they can to make us want new things…

On the surface, you are of course right.

But then the question arises: who and why creates advertising, who defines the values of society, and why would people then blindly follow the advertising if they have no need for it?!

Most of the time we look at the consequences, the “effect” level ignoring the cause. It is Human nature that creates Human society and determines the values.

And the insatiable desire for more that drives all of us is not static, it has been growing continuously through Human history, especially through the last few decades when this growth has been exponential.

This is why changing the consequences, trying to change politicians, parties, ideologies, economic systems will not make any difference, since the root cause of everything that unfolds in the world is our inherent nature.

It is the insatiable, irrepressible desire for more, the yearning to accumulate anything we can for ourselves, consuming everything and everybody like cancer that we need to attend to and correct.

We cannot suppress or erase this inner hunger, this is why communism did not work, this is why addictions can’t be treated by oppression, restrictions but only by offering a different, greater desire (health, wealth, respect, power, etc) to overcome the addiction.

So we also need to find a greater, more attractive goal, purpose (first of all collective survival, solution to our global problems) to channel the all-consuming Human nature towards positive, constructive directions.
