How can we develop a “truly Human” consciousness that can understand reality?
Question from the Internet:
“Will AI ever be conscious? Or will it be so realistic that you can’t tell if it is or not?”
Probably many people have heard about this Taoist koan: “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”
It raises questions about perception of reality and consciousness in general.
So perhaps we could rephrase the original question in a way that “Who can determine if AI became conscious?” Are we actually conscious enough to perceive or determine anything about the world around us?
After all, when we honestly examine how we perceive reality and how our consciousness works, we can see and prove that we are all locked into our own 100% egocentric, subjective, and individualistic boxes or cocoons. We have no idea about the “real world,” and we do not even know if a “real or absolute world” exists at all.
All we know is what we capture through our limited and individually-tuned physical senses, which input our totally self-serving and self-justifying “personal computer” interprets in a very “monolithic way,” serving a 100% introverted and individualistic “pleasure/pain” calculation and decision-making system.
We can’t really call this consciousness or intelligence since we can’t even tell who we are and where we exist. We do not know why we are born, why we are called “human beings,” and what is the goal or purpose we would need to achieve through our lives.
At the moment, we are obsessed with AI and whether AI can become self-aware and conscious, but AI is the product of an actually unconscious and “quasi-intelligent” being — which being is busy self-destructing. So how could this AI achieve something its creator could not?!
If we want to become truly conscious and intelligent, if we want to be able to research and understand the world “as it is” and use everything the world has to offer, we would need to escape our inherently limited and distorted, 100% egocentric, subjective and individualistic consciousness.
Where could we escape or run to when “exiting ourselves?” Where is that place or area where the truly Human and objective consciousness and perception of reality is possible and attainable?
We need to build a unique, collective, and mutually integrated Human consciousness with its “composite” perception of reality. We all — or at least a critical minority of people — have to learn and practice sensing and experiencing reality through the desires, thoughts, and viewpoints of others while completely forsaking our own egocentric, subjective, and individualistic desires, thoughts, and viewpoints.
Only this collective consciousness and composite perception of reality — when we all sense, perceive, experience, and state reality and everything in it through each other — can give us the ability for truthful and objective assessment and conclusions.
Then, we would become able to tell if AI achieved actual self-awareness and consciousness. On the other hand, by the time we achieve such an omnipotent, all-encompassing, and all-understanding Human consciousness and perception, who will care about AI anymore?!
