How and why the greatest egoists will become “hunter-gatherers” again?!

If what you wrote was a feature of our nature, Zsolt, then we would find it present in all societies But we don’t. It is, however, very much a prominent feature of our contemporary world.

Anthropologists can point to many historical societies and a few contemporary ones, whose members do not behave in this way. Few hunter gatherers or gifting societies are ‘insatiable’ in their ‘desire’ to consume. The world’s remaining immediate return hunter gatherer groups are probably remnants of our ancestral societies who survived sustainably for tens of thousands of years.

These communities specifically limit their consumption needs in order to give themselves more time for social activities and to prevent the accumulation of wealth.

The idea that we are by nature a ravening consumer is not borne out by reality. Nor is the economist’s ideological myth that human wants are infinite. Anthropologists have been telling them this is demonstrably incorrect for over a century.

So no, we do not consume everything around us for its own sake. People are driven to consume as a result of the inner logic of our current form of society. It is a systemic problem. What we are witnessing is not a feeding frenzy driven onwards by insatiable human appetities. We are instead currently trapped in a historical cul de sac by a set of impersonal economic laws.

Modern human life is not a failure of restraint; it is a collosal tragedy.”

You are right with your observation. The solution, connection between your correct opinion and what I wrote is evolution.

Human evolution, Human history is the chronicle of the incessantly growing, intensifying Human “self-awareness”, inclination to rule over Nature and others.

So it is true that millennia or even centuries ago people lived in harmony with Nature and even today we can find such tribes, communities hidden in the jungle or still disconnected from mainstream society.

But in general today the “simple people of the street” have greater egos, desires to consume everything, hate towards others than Napoleon or Alexander the Great for example.

This constantly growing ego is the only reason why Humanity developed compared to other animals, without it we would still be hunting, gathering with full integration in Nature. All our discoveries, inventions, development is due to this burning fuel from proving ourselves at all cost at the expense of anything, anybody.

But this is necessary for our evolutionary role.

Our evolutionary role hinges on reaching the maximum development of our triumphant, prideful, all-conquering self-awareness, self-justification, feeling ourselves as the Masters of the Universe while at the same time finding ourselves on the cliff’s edge facing imminent self-destruction.

This breaking point where we are standing right now, should - combined with the “forced rehab” as a result of the virus - force us to activate our unique Human mind that is capable of critical self-assessment, initiating self-change.

All this should lead us towards a conscious, purposeful and methodical integration with Nature’s balanced system.

We need to become again like the original hunters, gatherers - being in harmony with Nature - but not instinctively. We need to achieve this consciously, against our maximally grown, intense egos, narcissism that is in display everywhere today.

This will give us a completely unprecedented duality in Nature: vast incompatibility and total integration at the same time!

And through this contrast finally we will be able to research and attain Nature’s system in its completeness, as immersed, “insider observers”. The comparative research will give us a truthful, objective picture, complete understanding and as a result we will also understand it open unique place, role in the system.

We live in the most exciting time in History history when this change towards a truly Human consciousness, towards fulfilling our Human purpose starts!
